The Help Guide aims to assist you with any difficulties you may encounter while using this e-book
You can use the book in the traditional manner using tables of contents, chapter contents etc. but you can also take advantage of the digital environment to speed up the process. This guide outlines how to use the various objects included in the guide and highlights how to make your reference experience as productive as possible.
Off-line use requires that you check on-line periodically to download updates. A quick an efficient search engine is provided allowing eas access to contents of the guides, because of the restrictions of the operating systems used in pdas and mobile phones this search facility may not be available on these devices. If this is the case a large saving of storage space may be made by removing the search database files - extension .db from the hughes/search sub-directory.
Files are optimised for rapid download and viewing on all screen sizes and contain hyperlinks for quick access to linked files.
The main file or Home Page (index.html) gives access to the various parts of the guide. This page may be accessed by the Hughes Guides logo at the top of each page so no matter how far you have drilled into the guide one click will give rapid return to the starting page.
The Guide consists of three sections :-
| Guide to Traffic Law | |
| Guide to Criminal Law | |
| Legislation |
Each section has a Table of Contents which contains hyperlinks giving one click access to the Chapters within the book or Act, Regulation, Order etc.
Each Chapter contains hyperlinks which may be internal to that chapter, external to another chapter or external to the Act, section of an Act, Regulation, Directive or Code to which the chapter text refers. All hyperlinks are in blue underlined text. (If you use your own CSS stylesheets to modify the links then they may appear differently).
Each Act, Regulation, Code or Note for Guidance may consist of one or many files. Each file has a list of contents at the top together with links to associated files and at the bottom of each page of multi-file Acts etc there are links to the Next section, the Previous section and the master Contents page for the Act, Regulation etc.
Hyperlinks within the Acts, Regulations etc may link to other parts of that Act etc. or to another Act, Regulation, Order etc.

Legislation is constantly being amended and is often bought into force in stages. To reflect this in the legislation files contained within this guide we have introduced a colour coding system. Within this publication :-
Black text - Where the text is in black it is typically in force - except for drafts or consultation papers.
Underlined black text - the legislation is in force. but is scheduled to be repealed or replaced.
Text highlighted in red or magenta - not in force at time of publication.
Text highlighted in other colours - coming into force on a specified date - see the main contents page for the legislation in question.
Green text - signifies legislation which is in force in certain police areas only
Light blue text - hyperlinks click ONCE on this link with your left mouse button or, if you are using a PDA, tap the screen once on the link. A different section of the file you are browsing will be dispalyed or a different file will open.
