e-guide support

This page is provided for users of our e-guides.

It contains frequently asked questions and helps to resolve loading or updating issues. We are pleased to say that the books are very stable and present few problems in everyday use.

Although we refer to the publication as an e-guide - it is truly an interactive guide which works as an off-line web site together with tens of thousands of links and a powerful search engine and is not to be confused with e-book readers which are of a different format and are mostly just the pages of a printed book displayed on a screen with very few interactive functions.

TOP

Q) Where do I start?

A) Insert the CD into your drive. It should auto-run and the install Menu will appear on your screen. Read the HELP notes before proceeding further.

If it fails to auto-run access the contents of the CD from My Computer and double click on the file autorun.exe

Q) SIT error on install?

A) The e-guide installation procedure requires a small degree of user input due the number of different platforms the book is used on.

Full details are in the readme file accessed from the opening Menu. The most common problem which returns an SIT error message is caused by the unzipping program which does not recognise the destination.

When prompted for a destination to load the book to DO NOT SELECT BROWSE - instead of browsing, type in the destination DRIVE LETTER in the box :-

EG : c:\ OR D:\

The book will load to \hughes folder on your chosen drive.

Q) Why the new format

TOP

A) The new format allows the guide to be viewed on any standard web browser whatever operating system is being used. It will function much quicker than previous versions particularly over networks and when downloading updates.

It has also allowed us to develop it for mobile devices. The guides and the legislation in your pocket!

Q) Zip files - what do I do?

When I have eventually downloaded them will they self update when I unzip them or do I have to find the file paths.

A)

Files are zipped to force your browser to download them rather than open them in the browser. Normally the file should auto download when clicked on in your browser window.- just left click on the download text in blue.

Once saved to your hard drive unzip and place file in the Hughes directory - allow it to replace any existing file of the same name.

Win ZIP is available for download from the internet if you haven't got it on your system.

MAC OSX users may experience problems with zip files using the standard Apple OS - this is a known fault with the MAC OS - if you experience this, download a free version of Stuffit Expander from http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/trial.html

Q) Download - Gozilla

I cannot download the updates for the Traffic Ebook. It comes up no reponse. I use gozilla for downloading.

A)

Gozilla does work, just in its main menu it states there is no response from the site (hughesguides). If you ignore this and just instruct it to download the file it does so no problem.

Q) Download - Real Download

I get on to the secure part of your web site without any problems, but when I click to download my computer starts a separate program called "real download". I have no idea where it came from, it is not something I have purchased, I guess it's found it's way on to my computer from the web at some point. Unfortunately I have no idea how to get rid of it, or even if I should. It is when this download program starts that I get a request for an Authentication Code to access your site, and the one you have supplied comes back with a "Parameters incorrect" message.

A) This is a bit of a puzzler. The reason all our download files are in zip format is to ensure that the browser doesn't open them and so forces a download - no other software is required as the server will automatically download the file to your computer.

I suggest you disable it or uninstall the software and you should be able to download without problem..

Q) How do I register my e-book and gain access to the CD User section of the site.

A) There is no longer any need to register. The access details for the web site are included on your Cd.

Your username and password give you access to the e-book section of the site during your licensed period.

We will remind you when the period expires and invite you to renew and send you details to maintain access for a further 12 months.

If you do not have an e-book you cannot gain access to this area - sorry.

Q) Do the books work on Windows and MAC

A) Yes - the new book is platform independant - it only requires a web browser to view the guide. It is compatible with Windows 98, ME, XP, MAC OS9 and OSX, as well as PocketPC 2002 onwards.
